The recent scope of high power gyrotorn development in JAEA was experiment of the multi frequency gyrotron. This gyrotron was designed to produce RF beam of 170 GHz, 137 GHz and 104 GHz. These cavity modes for multi frequency operation were selected to adjust the transparent frequency of the output window and internal mode converter. The long pulse operation of gyrotorn was examined. RF power generated by the gyrotron was coupled into the transmission line and multi frequency operation was demonstrated. The transmission power was measured.

The study of the millimeter-wave breakdown has been stimulated by the progress of high-power millimeter-wave sources. The experiment of atmospheric breakdown caused by high power 170 GHz millimeter-wave shows that the velocity of induced shock wave was 300-500 m/s and it was found too slow to support detonation wave. Hence CJ detonation model was not applicable for millimeter-wave breakdown. In this report, the physical model of the shock wave by breakdown plasma supported by millimeter wave was proposed. An analytical model of a shock wave supported by an atmospheric millimeter-wave plasma was proposed.
